Retaining
walls
A
retaining wall is built to support vertical slopes of earth and
rock etc. The retained soil, or backfill, when waterlogged can increase
in weight by many times the original dry weight. There are many
types of retaining wall structure, some built with large 1 ton plus
blocks, and typically in Spain Escoyera, which is a wall of very
large boulders backfilled with smaller rock and soil. More often
in smaller areas, or areas with limited access we use steel reinforced
walls that are filled with concrete that is "blown on"
under pressure. This is commonly known in Spain as Gunite.
The video below
is a retaining wall being created in Moraira. You will see the whole
process from digging the trenches to building the steel, Guniting
and cladding with stone to decorate.
